Webb12 nov. 2024 · Theo Schoon danced his way into the art and culture of Aotearoa. The Indonesian-born Dutch national arrived in Christchurch in his early twenties in 1939. He came with his family, essentially as a war-time refugee, and in the vanguard of a large wave of Dutch migration that would gain momentum in the postwar period. Schoon had had a thorough academic training at the Rotterdam School of Art, and I learned a great deal from him . . . Schoon’s familiarity with contemporary European art movements meant that I could learn about these things from one who had direct experience of them.’
