Webb14 apr. 2024 · ICF experiments at NIF present a unique challenge for ML because of the relatively small number of experiments and the diversity of parameters between shots. To date, there have been fewer than 250 Deuterium-Tritium (DT) ICF shots in NIF's operational history. WebbNIF is definitely made as an experimental physics facility, not an energy production demonstrator. Energy production is an engineering problem and even with this breakthrough I'd still say power from ICF is a TRL-2 concept. Still, there isn't a fundamental physics proof that says ICF power is impossible unlike electrostatic confinement.
