Iron rich chlorite
WebNi-rich chlorite (nimite) and Mn-rich chlorite (pennantite) are the other two less common principal varieties of chlorite. Most chlorites are trioctahedral in both sheets, i.e., the ferric iron content is low. WebThe chlorite group of minerals derives its name from the common green color of most varieties. The color is known to vary widely in different specimens, however, and to include different shades of green, black, brown, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, yellow, grey, and even white. The morphology is equally diverse.

WebJan 30, 2024 · Streak is not really a meaningful test for a rock, although a weathered basalt is likely to give a brownish streak due to oxidation of its iron-rich minerals. The apparent hardness of a fine-grained rock can also be misleading, because although fresh basalt is indeed quite hard, a weathered piece is likely to be much softer.
